Define Your Values

I was just listening to an episode of the Rich Roll Podcast featuring Brad Stulberg, a writer, coach, and researcher who has devoted his career to understanding sustainable high performance.

In the episode, Stulberg is talking about goals and how to break them down into small parts. But also how to have goals that reflect your values and that help you work on you while you’re working on them. That really resonated.

He said you have to define your values. And values here are more than just buzzwords that you put on a mirror. They are foundational to your identity. These values could be health, strength, wisdom, kindness, community, family, the list goes on. So it got me thinking.

What are my values? Obviously family, but also health and wellness. I like to think community. I like to think a pursuit of wisdom. And have goals that reflect that and foster that. It helps life have a direction rather than just reacting or floating along aimlessly. Defined values help the good stuff blossum. In a world of distraction, it helps keep you focused on what is truly important to you. And once those values are identified, you can begin creating process goals that enhance and develop those values in your life.
